The Dome Palm , by Sylvia Adams
This leafless heat.
Only the evergreen dome palm thriving.
The sun blots up the Atbara River,
bars it from feeding the Nile
spares only a few grudging reservoirs.
Trysts for strange bedfellows -
crocodiles, hippos, gazelles,
wild asses, doves and grouse.
Here Arabs take refuge
under the branches' shady Y s;
weave leaves into mats, ropes,
the comforting green of tents;
pound the brown fruit to a resinous powder
to boil as a porridge, its slow-
waking flavour of gingerbread.
